Wormery

We decided to make a wormery as the children were really interested in observing worms in our garden.  The children made a moist, dark home ready for them.  We needed to layer sand with sieved damp soil and had to keep our hands moist while we found and handled some worms to put in our wormery.  We put them in the topmost layer in the container and later added leaves for them to eat.  We kept them for a few weeks and watched the patterns they made in the soil and how they pulled the leaves down to process.  We kept the soil damp with sprays of water.

Not only did we learn about how to look after worms but we used lots of new vocabulary as we talked about what we observed.
